formal/logical是本节的作者分类,不是本库强制通用定义。
Rhythm: establish shared time, then place sounds
Tap twice, then tap only the first time while keeping time moving. This page separates when sound starts from how long it lasts. Prerequisite: beat and note names.
The tapping introduction does not require staff reading. If note and rest shapes are unfamiliar, use clefs and natural-note positions to check pitches, then complete the two-bar task in note shapes, rests and durations before returning to the onset/duration examples below. That task uses one treble staff, natural notes and 4/4; it does not replace the later compound-meter or polyrhythm checks on this page.
Core relationships
[General theory] A beat supplies a recurring reference; subdivision divides it into smaller units. Onset means when a sound begins; duration means how long it lasts. These are separate. The time signature also gives grouping and accent clues, rather than merely a row of boxes.
[Author's view] In “Rhythm sense”, Wiwi emphasizes a shared pulse in ensemble playing and immediate feedback on being early or late. His “ten times” wording is emphasis, not a measured ratio. Source: W-RHYTHM.
[Author's view] NiceChord's 16-step rhythm-grid article marks each hand's onsets using the smallest unit needed for the material. Source: N-GRID. The text was checked; embedded demonstrations were not played.
Applying the ideas
[Our synthesis] Separate a difficulty into time coordinates and pitch/movement. First tap the two-hand rhythm steadily on a table, then return to the keyboard. If errors return there, examine location and coordination rather than only repeating rhythm syllables.
[General theory] A 4/4 bar contains sixteen sixteenth-note slots. Recording only onset/no onset gives 2^16 binary patterns, without encoding duration, dynamics, ties or layers. Triplets, swing and continuously changing rubato cannot automatically be fitted into this equal grid.
[Our synthesis] Include the arrival on the next beat in a practice segment. Stopping at the last note of the current beat can hide a shortened ending. Testing the connection reveals this. Stopping to diagnose during practice and repeatedly stopping an ensemble after errors are different tasks.
Original miniature example
Use eight eighth-note slots in a 4/4 bar. Right-hand onsets are 1,4,6; left-hand onsets are 1,5, each held for 4 slots. The first right-hand note lasts through slot 3, the second occupies slot 4, and the third occupies slots 6–7; slots 5 and 8 are rests. Both hands start again on slot 1 of the next bar. First name the simultaneous, left-only and right-only onsets, then tap them. See E01.
Limits
[Our synthesis] Purposeful tempo rubato should preserve intelligible phrasing and coordination. Renaming poor synchronization does not establish interpretation. Assess recordings, voices and context; metronome deviations alone cannot decide the issue.
Related: reading, grouping, practice feedback.
The lower time-signature number need not name the felt beat
[Author's view] FOPP-05 illustrates time signatures with 3/4 and generalizes the upper number as beats per bar. Actual PDF page 18 and relevant existing Chinese were compared; the generalization needs conditions.
[General theory] 6/8 usually contains 6 eighth-note units grouped in 3s into 2 larger beats. 3/4 usually has 3 quarter-note beats, each divisible into 2 eighth notes. Both can contain 6 eighth notes while grouping and beat differ. Do not automatically equate notation unit with felt beat; also inspect speed, style and written grouping.
In original E13, keep the small units equal before changing grouping.
Change the grouping yourself
Open the bilingual offline rhythm diagram, hold eighth notes per minute constant, switch between 6/8 and 3/4, and compare beat count with bar duration. It is a silent manual time model, not a metronome; text comparison and calculations remain available.
Cut time, syncopation and triple division answer different questions
[Translation review] In FOPP-26, cut time on physical page 64 becomes 切分拍 in Chinese paragraph 19, inviting confusion with syncopation. We use 二二拍(alla breve / cut time); syncopation concerns accents relative to expected metrical points.
[General theory] In 2/2 a half note commonly receives the beat, with two beats per bar. Dividing a quarter-note beat in 4/4 into two eighth notes is ordinary division. Dividing that same beat into three equal notes gives the common eighth-note-triplet case. A larger beat in 6/8 already commonly divides into three eighth notes; three notes alone do not establish a triplet. Relevant text was checked in OMT on signatures and tuplets, without reviewing its audio or every score figure.
[Source limits] FOPP physical page 63 also conflates duplet and tuplet, so translation is not the sole issue. NiceChord's simple/compound-meter article helps separate beats from divisions. We distinguish three divisions per beat from three beats per bar, and do not define metrical strength as necessarily louder sound.
Twelve slots do not mean twelve attacks
[Author's view] FOPP-55, physical pages 132–134, explains polyrhythm through three against four and proposes a “threefold speed” perception. Page 132 also explicitly overrides hardest-first work to establish a prerequisite skill. These are the author's practice and perception claims, not a guarantee that everyone can learn the piece after two years.
[Our derivation] Divide one common cycle into 12 slots, numbered from 0 and excluding the next cycle's start. The four-part division attacks at 0,3,6,9; the three-part division at 0,4,8. There are 7 voice events but only 6 distinct onset times because both attack at slot 0: 0,3,4,6,8,9. Thus this is not “7 occupied slots out of 12.” For a 0.5-second cycle, the smallest inter-onset interval is 1/24 second. This is neither 24 evenly spaced attacks per second nor independent proof of perceived “threefold acceleration.” Counting cannot replace acoustic evidence.
[Translation review] Chinese §55 paragraphs 16–19 and 24 largely retain the original's strong assertions: the main issue is the source argument, not merely a translated word. Paragraph 24 also over-specifies agitato. Its conventional meaning is an agitated or restless manner, not a prescribed hertz threshold or a formula by which clear attacks create a multiplied frequency. See the relevant entry on physical page 2 of Trinity's official terminology sheet. This does not validate a complete Chopin edition or compositional intention.
[Our synthesis] Establish both onset streams and their shared cycle at a comfortable tempo, then reduce subdivision cues and check the next shared boundary. Test rhythmic understanding, location and movement separately; do not impose a rule that slow work creates irreparable unevenness. Comparison with the text-reviewed NiceChord polyrhythm article should preserve the authors' different starting methods. Its media remain unreviewed.
More notes need not mean a faster tempo
[Our derivation] Playing 2 or 4 equal notes within the same second changes note density, without necessarily changing tempo. Name how many of which beat occur per minute before discussing speed. Descriptions of short values, tremolos and speed multipliers in FOPP-57, physical pages 142–145, do not directly specify a metronome setting.
[Source and translation review] On physical page 147, FOPP-58 changes a 6-note group to 5 notes while retaining time per note, inferring a 20% increase in group rate. That conditional arithmetic works: at 0.2 seconds per note, the group shrinks from 1.2 seconds to 1 second, increasing from 50 to 60 groups per minute. But if both groups occupy the same fixed-duration beat, changing note count need not change tempo. With a 1-second beat, 6 equal divisions last 1/6 second each and 5 last 1/5, both at 60 beats per minute. Five replacing six does not by itself prescribe acceleration; this batch did not verify editions or performances of the work. Chinese §58 paragraphs 10–11 largely preserve the original inference. The issue is treating a conditional model as the only interpretation, not incorrect multiplication of 20%.
[Practice choice] Use decision card PD01 to check the common beat and next group boundary. In a slow passage with dense runs, first identify written values, tuplet brackets and beat unit before discussing rubato. Many printed notes do not mean arbitrary maximum speed.
Original video: constant tempo, changing density
[Our synthesis] The bilingual rhythm preview compares4,8 and 16 attacks per bar at quarter note=60 BPM. Predict whether beats speed up, then count beats and subdivisions separately. Synthesized sounds illustrate timing; human listening and learner-effectiveness tests remain undone.
Ask when it starts, then how long it lasts
[Our synthesis] Use evenly spaced beats as a reference. In one attempt, start on beat 1 and end on beat 2; in another, start on beat 2 and end on beat 3. Both last 1 beat, but their onset positions differ. Record “when it starts” separately from “how long it lasts” before discussing tempo or emphasis.
[Translation review] Timing in FOPP-26 paragraphs 10,11,21 (physical 62–65/printed 61–64) includes the author’s meter, onset and tempo considerations: temporal organization. Duration denotes length. Formal/logical is the author’s classification in this section, not a mandatory universal definition here.
[Source limits] The optional right-hand 4/4 emphasis check at the end of paragraph 15 (physical 64/printed 63) is missing from the translation. It is a temporary practice perspective, not a change to the written meter. Double time wording, exact edition and efficacy remain unchecked, and the task is not required of beginners. Q-061/Q-062 record source-translation issues without requiring original summaries to reproduce every example.
Time continues without a new attack
[Original paper self-check] Stipulate one4/4 bar with a quarter-note beat and write 1 2 3 4. ModelA attacks C4 on beat1, holds2 beats, then attacks D4 on beat3 and holds2 beats. ModelB rests for the first2 beats, then attacks D4 on beat3 and holds2 beats. Answer: A has2 attacks, B has1, and both span4 beats. No new attack on beat2 implies neither an automatic rest nor a removed beat. This answered letter-note model is not unheard staff-reading transfer or an actual auditory test.
[Terms and sources] Measure/bar in FOPP section42 entry5 means a bar, not a beat; missing note in section55 entry18 is not missing beat. Inverted mordent cannot simply become turn: retain notation and edition before choosing realization; this pass adds no original-score validation for those works. See Q-104/Q-112/Q-113.
