Yiruma 的 Kiss the Rain 与 River Flows in You 尚无指定谱本,本页没有编造它们的小节或速度。
参见原创E16/E19。

From a new score to a practice project you can check
Choose a small passage, say what you want it to sound like, then practice, check and reconnect it to the music. Today's goal might be “keep this rest in time”; it need not solve every problem in the whole piece at once.
The central learning direction is to anticipate how notation sounds; key mapping and project planning help build and check that expectation.
This is our original practice route, not a full rewrite of the textbook or an implemented automatic piano tutor. It works with an acoustic piano, a paper score and your ears; MIDI is unnecessary. Begin with beat and note names, then use the rhythm diagram, duration diagram or chord diagram when needed. Without a particular edition, piece-specific measure tasks cannot be determined; arrangements, keys, fingerings and measure numbers may differ under the same title.
Try one cycle, then build it out
Confirm edition and goal → identify one obstacle → do a small task → check the result → reconnect the context → try again next time.
PP01–PP12 below are reusable task cards, not a linear course that must be completed every session. Begin with PP01 and PP02, then choose a small task. PP11 feedback runs throughout; PP12 continuous performance checks integration, which several successful fragments cannot establish. Mark unfamiliar harmonic names “to confirm”; that need not prevent you from reading already confirmed notes and rhythms clearly.
What supports this route
The cover and copyright page identify BOOK-FOPP3 / PDF-FOPP as Chuan C. Chang's Fundamentals of Piano Practice, third edition, 2016-07-28, ISBN 9781523287222. The eaStudio piano-textbook project contains 85 English extracted sections and 85 Chinese drafts; file presence does not establish complete translation review. “Physical” below counts PDF pages from the cover; “printed” is the actual footer, not the section number.
| Evidence and exact location | Short account of the author's position | Use and limits in this route |
|---|---|---|
FOPP-03, physical 14–15 / printed 13–14 | Choose interesting music, survey structure and estimate work | PP01/03; time estimates can change and do not promise learning in a fixed number of days |
FOPP-07, physical 20–21 / printed 19–20 | Prioritize difficulties; easier material may come first if it helps later work; overlap segments | PP04/05; difficult-first must respect prerequisites rather than bypass basic rhythm |
FOPP-06, physical 19 / printed 18; FOPP-52, physical 122–123 / printed 121–122 | Separate hands can isolate tasks; trying hands together is also allowed, with simplification when confused | PP06; completing all separate-hand work or exceeding target tempo is not an entry requirement |
FOPP-22, physical 51 / printed 50; FOPP-12, physical 30 / printed 29 | Slow work needs explicit observation goals; tempo difficulties warrant reviewing the method | PP07; this does not establish a single cause for every speed limit |
FOPP-37, physical 87 / printed 86; FOPP-38, physical 88 / printed 87 | Add the other hand or omitted notes progressively | PP06; record simplified and original versions separately; removing a note does not remove its time |
FOPP-52, physical 123 / printed 122; FOPP-54, physical 130 / printed 129 | Attend to rhythm, dynamics and articulation early | PP02/08/09; fixed timelines, near-target-tempo hand combination and universal pedal bans are not adopted |
FOPP-53, physical 126–128 / printed 125–127, especially physical 127 | The author explains works through short motifs and fingering patterns; similar motifs may need different fingerings | PP03; claims about Bach's intentions and graded difficulty are author inferences, not established history |
FOPP-15, physical 38–39 / printed 37–38; FOPP-45, physical 103–104 / printed 102–103 | Mentally recalling music can itself be practiced | PP10; vivid inner hearing does not automatically establish execution, absolute pitch or accurate memory |
FOPP-47, physical 107 / printed 106; FOPP-49, physical 118 / printed 117 | Observe performance through recordings, consider continuing after errors and review afterward | PP11/12; “play faster and louder after errors” is not adopted as a general rule |
FOPP-59, physical 149–150 / printed 148–149 | Work backward from goals through preparation, execution, checking, completion and maintenance | Supports the framework; task IDs, states, evidence formats and retest criteria below are our design |
PDF-PC, physical 17 / printed 16; PC-013 stills at 218, 226 seconds | Staccato choices depend on musical needs | PP09; handbook and selected stills checked, without complete listening or moving-video review |
PDF-PC, physical 20 / printed 19; PC-016 stills at 59, 91, 450 seconds | Notes within a chord can have different prominence | PP08; stills do not establish acoustical causality or one prescription for every hand |
PDF-PC, physical 36 / printed 35; PC-029 stills at 130, 138, 153, 165, 205 seconds | Slow practice should examine its relationship to target movements | PP07/11; stills cannot validate complete motion, effectiveness or safety |
This is source support, not independent experimental proof that every method works for everyone. Definitions and arithmetic below are labeled [General theory]; specific sequences, task cards and feedback strategies are [Our synthesis]. Reviewed passages also pull in different directions: §59 favors completing separate-hand work first, whereas §52 allows trying hands together at any time. We retain the conditions rather than extracting the most absolute sentence. See the source audit and evidence limits.
PP01 | Decide what this project is meant to accomplish
[Our synthesis] Prerequisite: a legally available, readable, specific edition. Record the work, arranger or editor, edition, pages and measure-numbering convention; separately record the performance order after jumps. Choose a goal such as “play a section from the score,” “perform a piece from memory” or “prepare a performance”; these require different acceptance criteria. No edition of Yiruma's Kiss the Rain or River Flows in You has been specified, so this page invents no measures or tempos for them.
Task and evidence: make a project card stating scope, current skills, unknowns, intended sound and estimated practice window. Point to the start, ending and repeat count on the score. Retest and integration: next time, confirm the same edition; reopen relevant checks after a score, goal or route change. Estimates may change; a deadline does not establish learning.
PP02 | Clarify time and symbols first
[Our synthesis] Prerequisite: the PP01 passage. Confirm clefs, key signature, accidentals, octaves, rests, ties, slurs, meter, tempo words and repeat signs; use the reading notes for unfamiliar symbols. Count, speak or lightly tap onsets and rests before finding the keys; tapping alone cannot check sustained notes or finger legato.
[General theory] 60 quarter-note units per minute and 60 half-note units per minute are different tempos. A quarter note lasts 1 second in the former and 0.5 seconds in the latter. In the conventional compound-duple reading of 6/8, a main beat is a dotted quarter: “eighth note = 180” and “dotted quarter = 60” can describe the same time scale, while grouping still matters.
Task and evidence: write the beat unit and tempo, then locate each onset on that grid; check notes, rests and ties across barlines measure by measure. Retest and integration: count again without the previous answer, then check pitches, sustain and release at the piano. Upbeats, incomplete measures and unusual notation need their actual context, not an automatic fill-every-measure rule.
PP03 | Find repetition and differences
[Our synthesis] Prerequisite: locating and reading the selected passage. Label repeated material A, B and so on, comparing pitch, rhythm, bass, entry and exit, dynamics and articulation at each occurrence. Use what you know to identify melody, accompaniment, phrase boundaries, tonal context and possible chords; if names are unfamiliar, first record actual notes and heard pauses. A chord root need not be the lowest note; see harmony.
Task and evidence: support every “same” label with an observation and leave a line for differences. Retest and integration: start at another occurrence with its entry and exit; a similar pattern cannot automatically inherit “completed” status. Structural analysis guides practice but does not replace checking each occurrence; fingering also depends on context.
PP04 | Address what blocks later work
[Our synthesis] Prerequisite: unknowns and difficulties from PP02/03. Turn each difficulty into a checkable question: note recognition, counting, a shift, hand coordination, melody prominence or continuous joining. Prioritize problems affecting several passages; when a difficult passage needs a missing basic skill, do the easier prerequisite first. Encounter difficulties early without requiring immediate complete performance of them.
Task and evidence: write “task X needs Y first” and a feasible simplified version. Observe one change at a time. Retest and integration: after Y works alone, return to X and check whether it actually helped; if it did not, revise the hypothesis instead of treating repetition counts as progress.
PP05 | Segments may be tiny; joins need their own practice
[Our synthesis] Prerequisite: confirmed boundaries, notes and timing. Choose a controllable unit, perhaps only two notes; include the next segment's beginning and check entry from the preceding segment. Task needs determine boundaries, which need not always coincide with barlines.
Task and evidence: record results separately for “segment alone,” “previous segment → this segment” and “this segment → next segment.” Preserve the intended pulse through joins without an extra preparation pause. Retest and integration: next time, start in the preceding segment and try another entry within the segment; after forming a longer phrase, recheck breathing, dynamics and direction. Pausing during segmented practice is allowed; silently turning that pause into a written rest is not.
PP06 | Separate hands are a tool; coordination is another task
[Our synthesis] Prerequisite: PP02 timing relationships and the PP05 segment. Separate hands if the other hand obscures the problem; if coordination already works under target conditions, separation is not a procedural obligation. When combining is difficult, add just one important onset from the other hand or temporarily simplify a hand, then restore the score progressively. State what was omitted and which timing and fingering conditions were retained.
Task and evidence: locate simultaneous and successive hand events on a timeline, then realize them at the chosen practice tempo. Success in each hand separately does not establish success together. Retest and integration: restore the full notes, articulation and surrounding segments before accepting the complete task; success in the reduction belongs only to that reduction. See original E16/E19.
PP07 | Tempo needs a unit, a purpose and a way back
[Our synthesis] Prerequisite: clear rhythm and a controllable segment. Record printed tempo, provisional performance target and today's practice tempo separately. If the score has only words, a provisional number is an interpretation, not a composer's number. Start where notes, rhythm, intended sound and controllable motion can be maintained. If excessive slowness changes a crucial movement, create a shorter or simpler target-movement task; this does not mean beginners must immediately play at performance speed.
Task and evidence: change tempo or complexity one at a time and record what changed; consider a next step only when the task criteria are met. Shorten, simplify or slow down when control is lost. There is no universal BPM increment, percentage or learning timeline. Retest and integration: retest the same conditions next time before extending the segment or approaching the target; slow success does not establish target-tempo ability, and a fast fragment does not establish a continuous whole piece.
PP08 | Loud, soft and which voice is speaking
[General theory] Dynamic signs describe relative intensity; crescendo means growing louder, not faster. Voices may have different prominence; voicing here means dynamic balance, not chord inversion.
[Our synthesis] Prerequisite: discernible notes and rhythm. Copy printed p, f and crescendo indications into the plan with their source; separately state “which line should be clearer” as an interpretive goal. Sing, imagine or play the melody alone, then add manageable accompaniment and check whether it obscures the line.
Task and evidence: hear the intended balance while checking that pulse and the other notes have not disappeared. For recordings, keep device position and settings consistent when possible; waveform size after automatic gain adjustment is not a direct measure of playing dynamics. Retest and integration: enter from the previous phrase and listen again after restoring every written voice; do not force one hand shape or movement merely to become louder.
PP09 | Connected and detached change the relationship between notes
[General theory] Legato seeks connection; staccato separates notes relatively. Actual staccato length depends on context rather than a universal halving rule. A tie joins durations of the same pitch; a slur indicates phrasing or articulation relationships and must not be conflated with it. Pedal can prolong sound after finger release, so finger release and an audible gap are also different.
[Our synthesis] Prerequisite: articulation signs and the PP02 onset grid. With two different notes you can control comfortably, try connected and detached versions; keep the next onset at its original time while changing connection or release. Give pedal its own task, first identifying the sound to retain or clear.
Task and evidence: hear the two relationships while counting identical onsets; do not infer a particular finger or joint movement from sound. Retest and integration: restore actual tempo, voices and pedal, then check again. Physical movements need suitable demonstration and observation; a tutorial trick is a candidate only when it matches the task, hand and conditions.
PP10 | Check what you know away from the keys
[Our synthesis] Prerequisite: a checked short passage. Look at the score and recall rhythm, melodic direction or key locations; clear internal pitch need not be forced immediately. Start with an answerable question such as “where is the next rest?” Then check the score or keys and mark uncertainty.
Task and evidence: describe an entry, the next event and the direction of the join, then test them physically. Memorization is a goal for some projects, not an entrance requirement for all learning. Retest and integration: retrieve from another entry next time and reconnect the music; imagined, spoken and played success are separate records. No absolute pitch, elimination of anxiety or permanent immunity to forgetting is promised.
To check notation-to-sound ability, also use an unheard, manageable short score: record rhythm and interval predictions first, take a reference pitch, imagine or try singing, then check at the piano. Keep movable do, fixed do, relative pitch, absolute pitch and memory of a recording separate; see the inner-hearing route and original comparison. This is our transfer-check design, without a completed learner-effectiveness trial.
PP11 | Make feedback specify the next action
[Our synthesis] Prerequisite: one explicit criterion. After an attempt, use “observation → hypothesis → next action → recheck”: for example, “the join gained a beat → perhaps preparation for the next position was late → practice the preceding note to the landing while keeping the pulse → retry the original join.” “Perhaps” remains a hypothesis; one mistake cannot identify a unique cause.
Feedback can come from listening while playing, a later recording, video clearly showing the target movement or a teacher's observation. This works with an acoustic piano; a microphone alone cannot confirm fingering, gestures, joint loading or freedom from injury. This page has neither measured nor implemented automatic feedback. The player reports comfort, control and pain; stop the movement if pain occurs, rather than offsetting it with a tempo score.
Task and evidence: record location, observation, evidence type and remaining unknowns; test one actionable change next. Retest and integration: after the change, retry both the isolated spot and its original context. If it does not improve, narrow the question or ask someone who can observe the playing; do not attribute every failure to insufficient practice.
PP12 | Turn “a learned fragment” into usable performance
[Our synthesis] Prerequisite: evidence for the relevant small tasks and a clear repeat/jump route. Separate repair from continuous performance: stop when repairing, but follow the chosen scope during a performance simulation, log problems afterward and return to repair tasks. Choose musical re-entry points and practice reconnecting rather than skipping arbitrary unknown measures.
Task and evidence: complete a contextualized take against the PP01 goal, recording the actual tempo unit, edition, repeat route, intended sound and handling of errors. An edit of best fragments does not establish continuous performance. Retest and integration: next time, check retention before repeatedly relearning that passage; use normal physical preparation first, without requiring cold or uncomfortable playing. Schedule the interval for the project; “next time” is not a validated optimal spacing interval. Later review rechecks notes, rhythm, expression and joins; passing once is evidence under current conditions, not permanent mastery.
A task card to copy
These fields and states are [Our synthesis], not a management-software specification supplied by the book.
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Object | Edition / page / measure and beat location / voice / entry and exit |
| Basis | Printed instruction, source advice or personal interpretation; keep them distinct |
| Goal | One observable sound or timing relationship |
| Prerequisite and method | What is needed first; separate-hand, reduced, rhythm or joining task |
| Conditions | Beat unit + tempo; reading or memory; pedal; reduction |
| Evidence | What actually happened; who listened or watched; uncertainties |
| Next step | Retain, change conditions, shorten the task or seek demonstration |
| Retest | Next check and result under the same conditions; result inside the phrase |
Possible states are “needs clarification / ready to try / achieved now / retained next time / reconnected / recheck needed.” “Reconnected” still needs evaluation against the section or whole-piece goal; checkbox counts alone do not measure musical completion.
Try it with an original miniature
[Our synthesis · original example] Use the two-bar E19 line: D4 E4 F4 A4 | G4 F4 E4 D4, all quarter notes, 4/4, without pedal. Start the first measure at quarter note = 60 and aim to retain this tempo through both measures, without expressive tempo changes yet. D4 is D above middle C; identify notes before finding keys, without needing a MIDI instrument.
[General theory] Set the first onset to 0 seconds: the onsets fall at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 seconds; sustaining the last note for its full quarter-note value ends at 8 seconds. The join is A4 at the end of the first bar to G4 at the start of the second: 1 second between onsets, not an additional 1-second preparation pause. E19's omitted-note version replaces the third note with a quarter rest: still 8 time units, but 7 onsets.
[Our synthesis] Check the join alone before pursuing both faster playing and stronger contrast. If it is late in the first attempt, record the observation, reduce to the boundary notes with context and retry; check retention next time. If you choose a crescendo in the first bar and a diminuendo in the second as this example's personal interpretation, open a separate PP08 task without claiming those markings belong to an existing composition. These numbers are checkable teaching conditions, not a completed performance experiment.
The original and translation also need checking
[Translation review] Chinese §59 paragraph 6 reverses the planning relation; this route corrects it to “later goals determine the initial preparation.” Chinese §52 paragraph 27 renders the ordinary English body as a formal development section, adding an analytical claim; we use “middle section” without automatically turning the author's narrative into a sonata-form analysis.
Chinese §54 paragraph 2 renders cut time as syncopation. Cut time normally means 2/2 / alla breve; syncopation is a different concept. The original's score claim also requires checking: NMA page 24 published by the Mozarteum Foundation clearly prints 2/4 at the opening of Alla Turca, unlike the cut-time description on FOPP physical page 129. Only this meter was checked here, not the complete movement or every edition; no source score image is republished.
Fixed timelines, mandatory overspeed separate-hand work, always combining near target tempo, compositional intentions, pedal history and promises to eliminate errors have not become universal rules in this route. Piece goals, bounded evidence, interpretive choices and open questions should remain visible; phase-one source coverage and final QA are still incomplete.
Connect public articles to tasks

Use the technique diagnostic cards to turn sound problems into observable small experiments. There are currently nine cards (TC01–TC09); the full tutorial technique corpus is not distilled yet. Complete source qualifications remain in the public ledger.
Turn explanations into checkable tasks
Three practice-decision cards separate tempo/density, low voicings and two-chord choices into prediction, comparison, immediate checks and delayed reintegration. Technique cards TC06 and TC07 test sustained melody and different hand releases. These are original applications; citing a book does not establish efficacy. Historical intention, edition superiority, unlimited speed/endurance and an exclusively correct pedal plan in FOPP56–58 remain unverified or disputed author claims. They do not replace the user's actual score edition and capability assessment.
Added evidence mapping: lesson goals and feedback
FOPP-62, physical 160–162/printed 159–161, supports the author’s advice to separate new-piece practice methods, returns to old repertoire and performance preparation. FOPP-66, physical 173–174/printed 172–173, discusses definitions, records and individual adaptation. PP status fields, delayed retests and acceptance procedures remain our project design, not claims that every field comes from those sections. See PD04–PD05 for separate understanding/discrimination/execution records and TC08–TC09 for reconnecting voice targets and keyboard location to real phrases. Source generalizations about high-register prominence, internalization within days and fixed practice time are not promoted to universal standards.
