来源:Chuan C. Chang,Fundamentals of Piano Practice,第三版(2016)。

Practice methods: turn prescriptions into checkable choices

If the left hand is already wrong alone, inspect it first. If each hand works alone but combining them fails, inspect their alignment. The method follows the problem. Prerequisite: practice feedback.

Source: Chuan C. Chang, Fundamentals of Piano Practice, third edition (2016). English extracts and selected claims in the existing Chinese translation were compared for FOPP-03/06/07/13/22/39/40/50; PDF pp. 31/91/92 were also viewed. This does not count other sections as reviewed.

A framework for personal experiments

[Author's view] These sections connect repertoire goals, hands-separate and segmental work, connections, tempo checks, slow practice and pedals. They emphasize diagnosis and trials. Wording such as most effective, every student and must needs its conditions and experiential context.

[Our synthesis] Match a method to the observed error:

Observed problemPossible decompositionRequired follow-up
Wrong notes or unreliable location in one handCheck that voice independentlyRecheck coordination with both hands
Segments work, but the join pausesInclude the next segment's beginningEnter from earlier and from random starts
Rhythm feels steady but recorded timing driftsCompare against a shared beatRemove the external beat and retest
Slow playing works but fast movements failRecheck travel, grouping and fingeringTest the movement under target conditions

This is our experimental framework, not the author's exercise list or a promise that one method fits all material.

Slow practice and metronomes need purposes

[Author's view] Section 22 assigns several purposes to slow practice and recommends a slow finish. Section 13 uses the metronome for brief checks. Wiwi's PC-029, 116–213 seconds, asks whether slower practice retains the intended movement. ASR and frames at 130/138/153–165/205 seconds support limited cross-checking; there was no full moving-video review or listening verification.

[Our synthesis] Test a method on a tiny passage before extending it. With or without a metronome, specify what is being checked. A tool's presence or absence does not establish musicality.

Claims not adopted as settled findings

[Evidence limits] This task has not independently verified section 6's simplified brain-hemisphere account, section 13's uniform time threshold or section 50's intelligence and starting-age benefits. Section 39's historical/acoustical reasoning and section 40's absolute opposition to partial left pedal also need dedicated verification. They do not become universal health, development, equipment or performance prescriptions here.

[Translation review] The Chinese opening of section 22 is awkward; the English rhetorical opening also needs its following context. Neither should be isolated to claim that slow practice is ineffective. Our short original explanation is narrower: choose a check while slowing down, such as anticipating the next note; repetition counts alone do not establish learning quality. We have not rewritten or redistributed the source passage. Section 39's action-part terminology still needs a technical reference. Matching paragraph counts establishes structure, not translation accuracy or validity of the source's argument.

Related: feedback, grouping and fingering, pedals, E08.

What is this attempt testing?

Should you stop after a wrong note? State the purpose first. When locating an error, stopping to inspect a pitch name makes sense. In a trial performance, reaching an agreed endpoint before reviewing reveals continuity. These are different tests and need not replace one another.

[Author's view] FOPP-26/27/37/38 discuss movement choices at speed, deterioration after fast playing, two-hand coordination and simplified material. Relevant body text on physical PDF pages 61–63, 65, 67, 87 and 88 was checked. Claims that metronome acceleration fails, one-hand speed must reach fixed ratios, or simplification immediately enables target tempo are not validated universal thresholds here.

[Our synthesis] Switch deliberately among four tasks: locate an error; repair a small segment; connect preceding/following notes; run to an agreed endpoint before recording results. Specify tempo, permission to stop and success criteria separately. Success on a reduced version establishes only that version under those conditions; restore notes and test again. See original E15 and E16.

[Supplementary source] Wiwi's learning article links understanding, demonstration and repetition. We use a goal-and-result framework without treating a fixed repeat count or copied movement as an effectiveness guarantee. Its biographical anecdotes were not independently verified.

[Translation review] FOPP-37 Chinese paragraph 2 gives an equal-duration rule for learning and unlearning. The English stresses difficulty changing established habits, without an equal-time formula. We retain the limited point that changing a habit may take time, without predicting days for an individual.

Judge practice material by its transfer target

[Comparison] Newly read FOPP-01/10/43 warn against equating mechanical repetition with skill growth. Section 43 makes sweeping judgments about Hanon, including expert-consensus and historical claims not established here. Wiwi's Hanon article is narrower: he uses it infrequently but explicitly does not oppose all exercises; a clear purpose matters. Neither author's position directly establishes an individual student's outcome.

[Our synthesis] Write one observable question for an attempt, such as whether two voices can enter together on the chosen beat. Record the exercise result, then test the same feature in an actual passage. Success only within the exercise is local success. Time spent, sweating or finishing a book does not establish transfer. Reuse the repair, connection and trial-run record.

[Translation review] In the relevant FOPP-10 passage, quad counts four repetitions; it does not automatically mean a notated quadruplet. Physical PDF page 25 (printed 24) and Chinese paragraph 4 were checked. The opening of FOPP-01 lists a routine the author criticizes, not a recommended daily plan.

Define completion before choosing a starting method

For example, “read the score and play two bars continuously at an agreed tempo” differs from “start anywhere from memory.” The latter must not silently become a prerequisite for the former.

[Translation review] Chinese paragraph 6 of FOPP-59 reverses a passive relationship. Physical PDF page 149 (printed 148) says the start should be determined by the needs of subsequent execution, completion and maintenance, not that the start determines everything afterward. Project management is a useful planning analogy, not evidence that every piano learner automatically becomes an expert manager.

[Our synthesis] Set an observable goal, then plan segments, joins, whole-passage checks and later revisits. Revise the plan when needed. One successful check describes its conditions, not permanent completion. Write one sentence for what you want to learn and another for what this attempt actually tested.

[Comparison] Wiwi's article on skipping theory objects to marketing that bypasses foundations; judgments about tool users and artistic value remain personal views. We suggest learning theory through a current problem, such as distinguishing root from bass, then testing it in an original example. Completing theory is not a prerequisite for beginning to create, and tool choice alone does not determine musical ability.

[Evidence limits] Broad causal claims in FOPP-69 about education, careers, IQ and practice methods are not independently supported here. We retain practical planning questions: does the goal leave time for other life activities, and has local work been reconnected to the whole? No intelligence or career benefit is promised.

Turning teaching advice into a personal practice project

[New source scope] English extracted bodies of FOPP-62/63/64/65/66 were read in full; relevant actual PDF passages on 156–174 were compared with 35 selected Chinese paragraphs. Section 62 includes new-piece analysis, practice demonstration, old-repertoire maintenance and performance preparation; section 66 calls for explanations and records. This supports making tasks explicit, not every learning theory in those sections. See PD04–PD05 for a concrete feedback cycle.

[Our judgment] Keep separate columns for explaining on paper, hearing a difference, playing it, and succeeding next time. A teacher can supply needed demonstrations and cues, then reduce prompting to check independence. Do not adopt section 62’s absolute claim that helping find a note prevents learning forever, or fixed minutes every few days as a universal minimum for any progress. Graded exams may help select goals; they need not be compulsory for every learner.

[Author claims not established here] Sections 63–64 generalize about teaching history and famous pianists; section 65 proposes genius creation and IQ categories; section 62 makes infant-development, automatic-absolute-pitch and genre-effect claims. None received independent validation in this batch. We promise no health, intelligence, starting-age or guaranteed-success outcome. Section 66 first requires success for everyone every time, then acknowledges individual adaptation. Its self-selected definition of scientific method is not empirical evidence.

[Translation corrections] Chinese section 62 paragraph 14 reverses “mental development is the main reason for listening to classics” into “listening to classics is the main reason for mental development.” Restoring the grammatical relationship does not validate a Mozart effect. Chord attack in section 63 paragraph 6 should not acquire an added instruction to strike forcefully; we use “simultaneous chord onset,” with procedure still dependent on context. Chinese section 64 paragraph 5 drops the institution from conservatories; restoring it does not validate sweeping claims about teachers. Only short repository explanations change; original translations remain intact.

[Observable scope] Finding a pitch shortly after hearing reference notes may use those recent references; it cannot alone establish absolute pitch. Imagining, humming, pressing keys and naming provide different evidence. Preserve prompts and exposure before choosing the next step rather than diagnosing failure from a learner’s difficulty describing private inner sound.

Compare the present task without a permanently stronger hand

[Translation review] FOPP-06 paragraph11 (physical20/printed19) discusses hand differences for particular tasks; the translation instead makes one hand better at everything. Q-069 retains task dependence while leaving broad transfer guarantees attributed to the author.

[Our synthesis] State a question such as whether a note sequence is decoded correctly or attacks occur in the intended order. When checking hands separately, record actual pitches, prompts and tempo; log register or fingering changes too. Borrow from a more successful attempt only under comparable conditions, then check coordination separately. One success does not permanently designate a stronger hand; retain unknown when comparison is unavailable.

[Translation review] Tendency in FOPP-10 paragraph7 (physical26/printed25) is an ordinary qualifier, not a musical term that needs to remain untranslated. Q-073 only explains that speeding up this example may unintentionally increase loudness and that the author requests soft playing for this exercise, not every piece. Q-051 adds the chord-attack location in§9 paragraph1; Q-027 extends to quad occurrences within§9 paragraphs6–17, without new finding counts.

How bibliography and author experience enter a practice project

[Source roles] FOPP-82 contains references/commentary; FOPP-85 is autobiographical. Their English bodies were read this batch, without verifying every cited book, paper or historical relationship. The author values documentation, explainable steps and project management, which can motivate our task design. Personal credentials, family absolute pitch and success stories do not establish the same outcome for everyone (extended Q-007).

[Source correction] Chinese section82 entry27 adds a PPI physiological-basis statement after a paper citation, absent from that English entry (Q-085, physical232/printed231). PPI means the author’s post-practice improvement. This pass identifies an addition without using the cited paper to establish piano-learning mechanisms or clinical conclusions. Recommendations, dismissals and superlatives in the bibliography remain the author’s judgments.

[Our synthesis] Keep four short records for a task: observable target, what the source actually says, our added task and remaining unknowns. Finding a repeat may reduce duplicated analysis, but each entry, actual key location and phrase-end join still needs checking. Give them separate completion evidence and later retry without the answer. Neither scientific credentials nor a bibliography replaces observed results. This is our project design without learner-trial evidence of universal superiority.

Turn a book’s advice into a task to check

[Author's view] In paragraph83 of FOPP-83, Chang praises structured practice while reviewing Macmillan. This is a secondary review; Macmillan’s book was not read in this pass. It offers a lead toward a checkable small goal, not a universal completion deadline or proof from famous-person anecdotes.

[Our synthesis] Write the observable result you want to improve, then source, conditions, current uncertainty and next retest. For example: “After reading these3 notes, predict contour, then check key locations; retry tomorrow with the same reference.” If note names are right but playing stalls, separate key finding and joins into different tasks; success in one ability does not close the whole project. See the read-and-imagine task sheet.

[Translation review] Paragraph87 includes1 among primes, repeated in Chinese. A prime must exceed1 and have exactly2 positive divisors,1 and itself;1 has only1 positive divisor. This arithmetic correction does not establish an error in the reviewed book or validate musical structure or a practice method. Paragraph165 infers from historical physical condition that performance ability comes entirely from relaxation; retain that as an author inference, not a strength, health or movement prescription.
