Read, imagine, then play: a task sheet you can retest

The goal is to form a checkable sound prediction from an unfamiliar passage. First learn to say “the second note rises and the last note lasts longer,” then gradually connect pitch, rhythm and voices; imagining an entire work is not a first-day requirement. Paper judgment, inner hearing and actual playing are different outcomes and should be recorded separately.

Prerequisites: pulse and duration, note names and clefs, and inner hearing. The table is an original letter-name diagram, not a staff sight-reading test. Digits in note names indicate octaves; C4 is middle C. If key location is uncertain, first check an existing keyboard diagram rather than playing blindly.

Change one condition at a time

Choose C4 as the known reference for this round. You may hear the reference once before imagining, but do not hear the target melody first. This trains relative pitch with a reference, not absolute pitch. Singing is optional; you can write contour arrows. Answers are disclosed on this page, so these are guided exercises, not held-out transfer tests.

Original paper versionSuccessive sounding notesDuration of eachSpecified tempo unitOne-bar duration
A,3/4C4,D4,E41 quarter note eachQuarter note=60 BPM3 seconds
B,3/8C4,D4,E41 eighth note eachEighth note=60 BPM3 seconds
C,3/8C4,D4,E41 eighth note eachQuarter note=60 BPM1.5 seconds

B and C have the same written values with different tempo units. A and B have equal real-time attack spacing despite different notation.3/8 can also be felt as one larger dotted-quarter pulse; the smaller unit is specified here only for comparison, not as a rule for accents or conducting every3/8 work. All three versions have3 attacks. Sustain the last note until the bar ends; do not stop timing at its attack.

BPM counts the specified unit per minute;60 without a unit cannot determine playback duration. Meter specifies the bar’s notated duration capacity, not performance speed on its own. Write the predicted total time for A,B,C, then compare with even light taps; without a timer, compare equal versus half-duration relationships.

Turn an observation into a project task

These steps are our design, informed by short passages, mental prediction and structured practice in the sources. They are neither a textbook’s verbatim method nor a validated treatment.

Work itemActionCompletion evidence and next step after difficulty
Reading conditionsRecord clef, current key signature/accidentals, meter and tempo unit; circle changesExplain the basis for every note name used; check uncertainty first and retain question marks
PredictionAfter reference C4, write pitch direction and attack/hold timing, then attempt inner hearingRecord your own prediction; “I cannot imagine it” is valid, without inventing an auditory experience
Tiny taskTap only A’s rhythm, or play A’s notes successively and comfortably; do not judge every dimension at onceRecord whether note naming, key location, attacks, holds or sound prediction differed; simplify and retry
Immediate checkCompare against this page’s answers using the same unit; record actual sound separately from predictionChoose one discrepancy and change only a relevant condition next time; a wrong note cannot establish a particular joint action
Delayed retestAt the next session, hide the answers and retry with the same reference conditionsRecord hints and any need to find the reference again; passing a familiar example is not unfamiliar-score transfer
Phrase integrationJoin the learned chunk to a comfortable short chunk before and after itIf the chunk succeeds but its join stalls, make “previous ending→this beginning” a separate task; do not blindly raise tempo

B or C can be the next comparison; all versions need not be completed today. If movement is uncomfortable, retain paper/light-tapping work and seek suitable teaching help. No universal fingering, mechanical action or pain-training drill is prescribed. A microphone cannot establish fingers, posture or injury causes either.

A genuine transfer check needs separately unseen and unheard material, with reference, hints, clef and difficulty recorded. Rearranging and revealing this page’s answers does not create an unknown test. Before using the fuller predict-before-play illustration, distinguish remembering a heard example from predicting a score on first sight.

What the textbook actually contributes here

The short instruction in FOPP-84 connects the included melodies to mental play and pitch training, without proving efficacy. Exercises47,48,49 appear on PDF physical261/footer260/embedded score page39;58,59 appear on physical262/footer261/score page43. Physical259 contains the section instruction;260 has only the Beyer title. These three page-coordinate types serve different purposes.

Subsequent independent inspection covers 100 printed bars/200 staff-bars across five scores, with 199 duration readings resolved and U01 retained beside the second RH note in No. 58 bar 4. Nos. 47/58 use common time (4/4, not C major), 48/49 use 3/4, and 59 uses 3/8. A lower staff is not automatically bass clef. All 82 fingering digits were read, without establishing physical suitability. See bounded coverage and uncertainty; edition authenticity and actual performance remain unverified, and score pages are not reproduced.

Chinese additionally classifies47–49 as scale-fingering exercises and58–59 as more-advanced melodies, adding a section17 step4 link. Those groupings are absent from this section’s short English instruction and are not verified difficulty grades. Our original A–C are not rewritings of the Beyer melodies. An acoustic piano supports later practice without MIDI or equipment purchase.
