本库原创的和声计划是Dm—E♭/G—A—Dm,在给定的D小调语境中标i—N6—V—i。

全局时间从0开始,[a,b)包含a、不包含b。

Neapolitan chords: spell lowered degree 2, then find the bass

Separate three questions

In D minor, what chord is E♭–G–B♭? If G becomes the lowest note, does G also become the root? How might the connection be understood if an A major triad follows? This lesson checks spelling, bass and context in that order, then practices them with four original bars. Answer on paper first; identifying chords by ear is not required.

Prerequisites are letter names, accidentals, triads and quarter notes. C4 is middle C; the number after a pitch is its octave, not a fingering. Tables use ASCII Eb, Bb and C# for E♭, B♭ and C♯ respectively; b is not the note name B.

Cover the answers below: write degree 2 of D natural minor, lower it by one semitone, and build a major triad on the result. Then answer a separate question: if G is lowest, how should the inversion be labeled? Keep “what chord is it?” and “what does it do here?” in separate columns.

Lower degree 2, not all three chord tones

D minor is explicitly stipulated as the context. D natural minor is D–E–F–G–A–B♭–C. Degree 2 is E; lowering it by one semitone gives E♭, whose major triad is E♭–G–B♭. Its semitone distances from E♭ are 0,4,7, while the letters E–G–B retain root, third and fifth relationships.

Here ♭II means a major triad on lowered degree 2: ♭ lowers the root relative to degree 2, and the uppercase numeral specifies major-triad quality. The native degree-2 triad of D natural minor is E–G–B♭, the diminished triad ii°. Changing only its root E to E♭, while retaining G and B♭, yields this example’s ♭II. B♭ is already in this natural-minor scale.

E♭–G♭–B♭ is an E♭ minor triad and does not meet the major-triad recipe here. D♯–G–B♭ can use the same three keys in twelve-tone equal temperament, but it does not preserve this example’s lowered-second root spelling or tertian letters. Equal keyboard positions do not replace a spelling check.

“Neapolitan chord” here refers to this major ♭II triad in a tonal context. Its common first-inversion form is called the Neapolitan sixth, written N6 or ♭II6. Check structure before deciding whether it serves a preparatory role before a dominant in a particular phrase; one E♭ chord alone cannot establish a piece’s key or function.

minorEb–Gb–Bb0,3,7E♭ minor; the third was incorrectly lowered for this task.
respellingD#–G–Bb0,4,7Same keys, but does not preserve this task’s lowered-second and tertian spelling.

Inversion follows the actual lowest note

The four voicings below are independent analytical objects without rhythm. A and B both have E♭3 in the bass, so they remain in root position despite different upper ordering and register. C has the chord’s third G3 in the bass, making it first-inversion E♭/G; D has the fifth B♭2 in the bass, making it second-inversion E♭/B♭. All four retain E♭ as root.

In voicing C, G3–B♭3–E♭4, B♭3 lies a minor third above the actual bass G3 and E♭4 a minor sixth above it. The 6 abbreviates the traditional triad-inversion figures 6/3; it does not mean “add another sixth” or “six notes.” G after the slash specifies the bass without renaming the chord G major.

Bar 2 of the four-bar example places the bass lower at G2 while retaining G3, B♭3 and E♭4; it is still first inversion. The written intervals above G2 are then an octave, tenth and thirteenth, reducing to unison class, third and sixth. Doubling G or widening the register does not automatically change inversion, and these voicings are not hand shapes that one hand must hold.

One stipulated D-minor connection

The original harmonic plan is Dm—E♭/G—A—Dm, labeled i—N6—V—i in the stipulated D-minor context. The second chord is placed before the dominant A here and can be analyzed as predominant. This interprets this plan; it is not a rule that every ♭II must receive that function. An actual work still requires its melody, bass, surrounding harmonies and style.

The A chord is A–C♯–E. C♯ replaces the natural-minor C as the raised seventh used by this example’s dominant. Do not change it to C merely to keep every note in natural minor, or relabel the whole phrase D major: the opening and closing Dm explicitly contain F natural. A tonal context does not require one unchanging seven-note collection throughout.

Voice V4 follows D4—E♭4—C♯4—D4. E♭4 to C♯4 descends two semitones in twelve-tone equal temperament, but the letters E–D–C span a third, so it is a descending diminished third, not adjacent-letter stepwise motion. C♯4 then rises one semitone to D4. These are spelling, interval and connection checks, without a guarantee of perceived smoothness or a model for four-part writing in every style.

Conversely, in an explicit E♭-major context, E♭–G–B♭ can be tonic I; the same collection alone cannot prove “D-minor predominant.” Likewise, a source suggestion to consider substituting a Neapolitan for a degree-2 or degree-4 chord does not remove the need to check the existing melody and all parts. This lesson does not ask you to replace every ii or iv in familiar music.

Four-bar timeline and practice routes

The phrase is in 4/4 with quarter-note unit q: 4q per bar and 16q overall. Global time starts at 0; [a,b) includes a but excludes b. Each voice has one 4q note in bars 1–3 and one 3q note followed by a 1q all-voice rest at [15,16) in bar 4. There are no ties, pedal or repeats; repeated pitches across a barline rearticulate.

The table supplies four complete voice timelines as a paper harmony model, not a recorded performance. Note endpoints represent stipulated duration boundaries, not measured key releases or sound cessation. V3’s A3 rearticulates in bar 4 despite being the same pitch as bar 3; keep the final fourth-beat rest rather than starting another pass early at q=15.

The full model contains 16 note events and four voice-rest events. The four rests coincide, forming one all-voice rest window. Summing note and rest durations across the four voices gives 64q, but the concurrent phrase lasts only 16q. In the key table, A0 is key 1 and C4 key 40; MIDI numbers are calculation labels and require no MIDI device.

Paper route: without looking at the answers, write bar 2’s root, actual lowest note, full pitches and inversion, then check the recipe table. Draw each voice on a sixteen-slot timeline and mark the rest at q=15. If you wrote G as root, revisit the root and bass columns; if you wrote E♭ minor, revisit G versus G♭ without diagnosing a fingering or hearing problem.

Piano is optional: first locate V4’s D4, E♭4 and C♯4 separately, then follow the full D4—E♭4—C♯4—D4 line and final rest. Play one note at a time, intending to release at the stipulated boundary and start the next note; no simultaneous chord grip is required. Saying names while pointing to paper slots also works. On a separate pass, check V1’s bass D3—G2—A2—D3 alone; neither upper voice nor bass alone realizes the full four-voice harmony.

If bars 2–3 are hard to read, isolate global [4,12): with local origin q=4, V4 is E♭4[0,4), C♯4[4,8), totaling 8q. After checking, reconnect bars 1–3, then complete all four bars and the final rest from bar 1. Completing the two-note fragment is not completion of the phrase, and the local exercise does not change the original bar numbers.

Tempo is only an arithmetic illustration: at quarter note=60 BPM, the phrase is 16 seconds, the fragment 8 seconds and the final rest 1 second; at 48 BPM these are 20,10 and 1.25 seconds. Choose a tempo that permits finding notes, counting and preserving the rest; these figures are neither required targets nor validated practice doses.

Record the route, answer visibility, root and bass answers, spelling, final rest, whole-phrase result and next check time; mark unobserved items “unknown.” Next time, attempt this familiar material without answers before practicing and record the actual interval. This is a delayed retention check, not an unseen-material transfer test; this page contains no real performance or learning-effect data.

Source boundaries and original derivation

All 82 existing NC-037 ASR segments were read; five stills at 63,81,125,181 and 205 seconds were inspected. The 63-second still shows C-major and D♭ labels; 81 shows C♯-minor and D labels. At 125, D♭, D♭/F and D♭/A♭ appear with a “most common” annotation pointing to the middle item. At 181 there is a C—D♭/F—G7(omit5)—C label row; at 205 a red box is labeled D/F♯. These observations establish visible text, labels and layout only, without a note-by-note source-score audit or work identification from the red box.

The unaudited ASR proposes construction as a major triad on lowered degree 2, consideration as a substitute for degree-2 or degree-4 chords, and common use of first inversion. These source explanations remain candidate attributions. A visible “most common” annotation proves that text appears, not a statistic across repertoire. The source’s history, particular-work analysis and judgments about a “strange feeling” were not verified here or adopted as general rules.

Source audio was not auditioned, continuous motion was not watched, the complete source score was not audited note by note, and precise ASR/still alignment was not verified. Inventory duration is 278.358 seconds and container duration 278.336 seconds, leaving an unexplained 0.022-second difference; neither represents actual listening/viewing time. There was no new ASR, physical-suitability validation or performance acceptance.

The D-minor recipes, four independent voicings, four-bar voices and rests, fragment window, counterexamples and record are original to this repository. Public files contain no source images, original media, complete transcript or private paths. ASR text plus selected stills constitutes limited modality coverage, not full audiovisual review; these files are author candidates pending independent review.
