Original experiments, set three

These materials and recording procedures are original. They do not replace the reader's actual playing or listening.

E10 Same keys do not mean the same interval spelling

Write C4–E4, C4–Fb4 and C4–F4. Count letter span, then semitones, then check at the keyboard. Record pitch, letter-span and quality errors separately. For the first two equal-tempered key combinations, having seen the spellings is not independent auditory evidence. Related: interval spelling.

E11 Record prediction before result

Use the original four-beat phrase D4–F4–E4–A4, four quarter notes. Away from the piano, record the expected contour and rhythm, then play and check. Next, look only at the second half and imagine/play from E4. In a third round, add one beat of rest before the phrase. Record which changed condition causes the most difficulty. Finish predictions before hearing the result; do not retrospectively claim you already knew it. Related: inner hearing and memory.

E12 Separate immediate performance, retention and transfer

Use the original six-beat phrase C4 D4 E4 G4 E4 C4, one beat per note. Choose a comfortable speed and your own practice amount; record wrong notes and extra pauses in the final attempt. At the next normal session, attempt it before looking at the pitch list, record the result, then inspect and correct it. Finally start at G4 or move the whole phrase up one octave as a separate transfer test. For each row record score access, prior reference sound, start and speed; note any intervening practice. This is not an AP test and promises no fixed practice dose or sleep effect. Related: retention and transfer.

Self-checks and expected results

  • E10: major third, 4 semitones; diminished fourth, 4 semitones; perfect fourth, 5 semitones. Under identical conditions on an equal-tempered keyboard, the first two contain no pitch difference that reveals spelling. Hearing no difference is not failure.
  • E11: rise a minor third, fall a minor second, rise a perfect fourth; the original lasts 4 beats. Starting at E4 retains the final 2 beats; adding a 1-beat rest makes the third trial 5 beats. No barlines are specified. If exact inner pitch is difficult, record direction first and check on the keyboard.
  • E12: starting at G4 means continuing from note 4 as G4 E4 C4, not transposing the whole phrase to G. An octave higher is C5 D5 E5 G5 E5 C5. Retention/transfer outcomes are open; a cued attempt is not an uncued one.
